Steel framing systems, or SFS, are highly efficient ways to expand your space. They are a versatile construction solution which can be used for extensions or stand-alone buildings in various industries.
At Tapper Interiors, we have completed many SFS projects, some of which are on our Case Studies page.
If you are considering a steel framing system or have questions about the process, contact the team at Tapper today.
What is a Steel Framing System?
A Steel Framing System is a robust, lightweight, highly sturdy steel structure that can be used as a load-bearing wall. This makes them perfect for extensions of commercial buildings and external structures.
You may have seen an SFS in process. The distinct steel frames for the structure complete the system, which also includes external grade boards and insulation.
The steel used in these systems is manufactured using a cold rolling process, which produces lightweight, C-formed studs to give them maximum strength and versatility. The lightweight steel studs can be used in a wide variety of load-bearing and non-load-bearing constructions.
Types of Steel Framing Systems
There are three main types of steel framing systems available.
Infill walls represent the most prevalent form of Steel Framing Systems (SFS). These walls consist of individual panels cut to size for onsite installation. Positioned between the steel frame floor and the ceiling or underside of the floor above, they effectively “fill in” the external wall areas.
Continuous walls, another SFS variant, feature panels extending to the structure’s ends, often termed over-sail panels. This construction method optimises internal floor space utilisation.
Panelised systems employ prefabricated components, including insulation boards, which are attached off-site. These prefabricated systems are then lifted into place by crane and secured to the steel structure.
Where are Steel Framing Systems Used?
Steel framing systems are becoming a popular alternative to traditional extensions due to their cost and time-saving properties. Some of the areas that they can be used include:
Extension construction for various buildings – SFS is frequently used in traditional extensions for homes and other structures. It can also be used for outbuilding construction, such as barns, garden rooms, or external office outbuildings. This is mainly due to its cost-effective nature for creating and expanding spaces.
Commercial building construction – SFS is perfect for commercial spaces such as offices, retail establishments, and even leisure centres. These buildings require study and durable structures, making SFS a fitting option.
Educational buildings – SFS is an ideal solution for educational facilities, from schools to universities. It is a highly versatile system that is highly efficient for extensions.
Healthcare Facilities – Steel framing systems can be utilised in large and smaller healthcare facilities to expand the space efficiently and cost-effectively.
Hospitality Sector – SFS finds widespread use in hotels, particularly larger establishments, offering flexibility for exterior and interior wall decoration.
Benefits of Steel Framing Systems in Construction
There are several benefits of using steel framing systems in construction and beyond. Here are the top 5 benefits;
1. Design and Flexibility Benefits of SFS
When investing in steel framing systems, you are investing in one of the most diverse and flexible ways to expand your space. With steel framing systems, you can have the components cut to size-specific design requirements, which means your architect has the freedom to get creative.
Because they are lightweight systems, SFS also has the flexibility to be used where traditional extensions may not be suitable—for example, the addition of floors onto multi-storey buildings or internal non-load-bearing walls.
2. Time and Cost Benefits of SFS
Steel framing systems typically cost less than traditional extensions or building solutions. This makes them more accessible to all and allows individuals and businesses the ability to grow and expand their space with fewer limitations.
SFS are also quicker to construct and use. The system is screwed together, and because there are no wet trades involved, it is suitable for use immediately. Compared to traditional building construction processes, SFS takes a fraction of the time.
3. Construction Benefits of SFS
The construction of steel framing systems is very straightforward and requires minimal skilled labour techniques. The steel frame components can even be stamped and labelled to simplify the process further.
This makes construction simple and easy to follow.
4. Safety Benefits of SFS
Along with construction benefits, time, and cost savings, SFS’s construction process is safer than traditional building methods. This is because the components are lightweight, which leads to fewer injuries on site.
5. Sustainability Benefits of SFS
Another great benefit of SFS is the sustainability it offers. The main sustainability elements come from the lowered carbon emissions used in construction when compared to traditional building construction techniques.
The total materials required are lighter and more compact, lowering transportation emissions. These systems are also highly energy efficient, so once the construction is complete, the building will require less energy for heating. Steel is also widely recyclable making it a highly sustainable product to use.
